Garden and Gardener's tips of the month - October

October is the perfect time to give your garden a tidy-up before the colder weather sets in. As well as clearing fallen leaves there are lots of other tasks that can help prepare your garden to survive the winter and blossom in the spring. Here are our top ten jobs for this month;

1. Collect fallen autumn leaves from beds, lawns and borders as these can sometimes suffocate and kill your plants with leaf mould. Use a leaf rake to sweep leaves from your lawn but rake by hand in your borders to avoid damaging delicate flowers. Using a leaf blower or garden vac might help to speed things up! Don’t forget to net ponds before the leaf fall gets underway as these can cause serious problems as they decompose if the the pond freezes.

2. Tidy beds and border plantings and divide herbaceous perennials. Remove leaves and broken stems by cutting at the base with a pair of sharp secateurs. If any have seed heads then leave these for the birds to enjoy. Remove any surviving weeds. Adding bark or compost as a mulch can help insulate plant roots keeping them safe from winter frosts. Collect and sow seed from any perennials and hardy annuals that you wish to keep.

3. When mowing your lawn for the last time, raise your blades higher than usual to leave the grass slightly longer over winter. don’t forget to trim the edges using shears or a ‘half-moon’ spade.

4. Protect outdoor planters by raising them using pot feet or bricks, this will help to avoid water logging in the wetter months. To protect plants from winds and frost, insulate pots with winter jackets - garden fleece or bubble wrap. Remember to continue watering, although it may be raining more it does not mean that your plants are getting the water they need but start to reduce the frequency of houseplant watering.

5. Use a pressure washer or a hose and stiff broom to clean decking surface or paths as leaves and increased rain can cause it to become slippery and unsafe.

6. October is a good time to clean out any bird feeders and boxes you may have. Dirty bird boxes can carry disease so cleaning them out will provide a safe home for the next family that moves in. Continue to feed birds and keep baths topped up for your regular visitors. Also clean out cold frames and greenhouses so that they are ready for use in the autumn.

7. Top up your compost heap with grass cuttings, leaves and finished crops. Ideally shred the leaves to reduce their space and increase the speed of decomposition so by summer you will have a free, nutritious fertiliser for your borders and beds.

8. After clearing up your borders its time to plan your display for next spring. Daffodils, tulips and crocuses should be planted early autumn ready for spring flowering.

9. Cover winter leafy vegetable crops with bird-proof netting and dig up any remaining potatoes before the slugs can get to them.

10. Finally get your lawnmower, hedge trimmers plus any other power tools not needed over the winter booked in for service in preparation for the next year.
